Few societies of the ancient Maya contributed as much to religion, art, and science as did Copan, tucked away in what is today a remote area of Honduras. No site has contributed more to modern mans understanding of the great Mayan civilization. Since its discovery in 1939, Copan has been an unmolested study in archaeology. Scholars, archaeologists, and Mayanists from around the World continue painstaking procedures among crumbled walls and intricate carvings with major discoveries continuing with dramatic regularity.

Although Copan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Honduran national monument today, the Mayan Civilization here reached its peak between 450AD and 850AD. Evidence of their artistic, cultural and scientific achievements can be found throughout the ruins. They have earned the title of "One of the Greatest Pre - Colombian Civilizations," which cannot be disputed once you've visited the site.
Set amongst dense jungle mountains, Copan is a spectacular excursion that should not be missed. The picturesque town of Copan Ruinas is only a few minutes walk from the major ruins. It hosts a national museum and has several pleasant hotels. Copan Ruinas serves as an excellent base for exploring the area and taking optional tours.
