This is the best area for advanced whitewater rafting. Two of the major rivers that run throughout this region are the Rio Sarapiqui and Pacuare. Exhilarating class III and IV white water rafting can be found here, but the rivers also have quieter sections that provide visitors with intensely close wildlife viewing opportunities. The region also offers some of the country's most premier private land reserves, many that link with national parks such as Braulio Carillo. This creates biological corridors from the heights of the mountains to the tropical lowlands. The large territorial needs for mammals such as jaguar and puma are met, while protecting an increasing percentage of important tropical habitats.

Braulio Carillo National Park is one of the closest parks to the capital, San Jose. This park protects several watersheds and has an abundant birdlife population. Five different forests are represented within the park and many stunning waterfalls are clearly visible from the road, which is lined with enormous plants and flowers. There are hundreds of varieties of orchids and ferns and the movie Jurassic Park was filmed here.
