What is it like at Sipadan Island?

Scuba diving at Sipadan Island is quite possibly, "Diving at One of the Best Diving Destinations in the World." Sipadan Island is surrounded by shallow coral reefs that suddenly give way to a drop of more than 600 meters, offering some of the best wall diving in the world. A magnet for marine creatures, divers will see dozens of green and hawksbill turtles, twirling tornados of thousands of chevron barracudas, a shimmering rolling ball of hundreds of jacks, herds of massive giant bumphead parrotfish and scores of white tip and gray reef sharks.

For those more inclined towards the smaller denizens of the reefs, there are numerous juvenile fishes, clown anemone fishes, decorator and spider crabs, coral shrimps, nudibranchs, prawn gobies and such rarer subjects as jawfish, ornate ghost pipefish, mandarine fish and frogfish.

Divers are sure to appreciate the remaining large stretches of lettuce, staghorn and other hard corals and the many varieties of soft corals, feather stars, sponges and sea fans. The many brilliantly coloured anemones and their cute partners, the clown anemone fish (Nemo) abound, as do juvenile reef fish and shrimp and porcelain crabs. These are just a few of the underwater species to be found here.

PLEASE NOTE: As of December 31, 2004, the Government of Malaysia has prohibited visitors from staying on Sipadan Island. DIVE SITE DESCRIPTIONS

Sipadan Island has 11 marked Dive Sites. All dives are Wall Dives. Following is a brief description of some of the sites and marine life you can expect to see.


DROP OFF: Just 20 ft from the shore, the wall plunges a staggering 2,800 feet down. Rated as one of the top 5 Beach Dives in the world. The wall is encrusted with different varieties of coral, turtles abound, sharks and a multitude of smaller reef dwelling fish live off this wall. The entrance to TURTLE CAVERN is also found about 70ft down on this wall.


BARRACUDA POINT: As the name suggests, Barracuda Point is where a large concentration of Pelagic converge. Expect to see large shoals of Barracuda, Jacks, Grey and White Tip Reef Sharks here. The schools number in the high hundreds. Current is strong here. It is a fast moving, high voltage dive site.


HANGING GARDEN: This wall is covered in a multitude of soft coral. Hawksbill & Green Turtles live on the ledges at this site and the current is usually quite calm here. A great spot for photography as the colorful corals hang from the interesting cracks and crevices along the wall.


TURTLE PATCH:
This site is home to a huge number of Hawksbill & Green Turtles. Many reef sharks also frequent this site. It is rather barren in comparison to some of the other sites, but trigger fish and other reef fish dwell on the upper coral reef, making it a well rounded site.


STAGHORN CREST / SOUTH POINT: There is a very strong current present at this site. Dives here can take you through up to 3 marked sites. Very large shoals of pelagics feed here including Barracuda, Jack, Sharks and Turtles. On the upper reef, a multitude of smaller reef fish abound. Coral is bursting with color, many huge Anemone and clown fish at this site.


WHITE TIP AVENUE As with all the sites on Sipadan Island, the name says it all. Expect to see huge Black & White Tip Reef Sharks, Grey Sharks, massive Green & Hawsbill Turtles as well as large shoals of Jacks & Barracuda.
