Sea of Cortez Dive Site Descriptions

Here are some of the most popular dive sites you'll visit in La Paz.

El Bajo: El Bajo is a series of sea mounts rising between 60 ft and 120 ft of the surface. They are about 1/4 mile in diameter and their walls drop a staggering 2000 feet down to the floor of the Sea of Cortez. The sea mounts are like magnets, attracting a large number of pelagics who come here to feed. Expect to see resident scalloped hammerheads, whale sharks, giant Pacific manta rays (20ft wingspan), marlins and several specials of large schooling fish. It is considered to be the best dive site in the Sea of Cortez and is a site for advanced divers due to strong currents.

Isla Los Islotes: Better known as the " Sea Lion Colony ", is located north of Espiritu Santos Island. With over 200 sea lions living here year round, diving and snorkelling with the seal pups is a must for every visitor. The pups fly around the divers and tug on fins and snorkels while you are not looking. You will also see a large variety of fish at this site. An extraordinary experience for all levels of diver.

El Bajito: Located next to the Sea Lion Colony is a beautiful dive site where cracks on the sea floor are covered with a profusion of soft coral. Small mantas, eels and some big schools of fish can also be seen here.

Whale Island: This small whale shaped island has caves, crevices, rocky reefs and a coral forest at 10 - 60 ft. Protected by the wind, the current is mild and the area is excellent for a second dive. Good fish life with free swimming morays, small angel sharks and a chance of passing whale sharks and dolphins. You can also view fish unique to the Sea of Cortez such as the Cortez Angelfish.

Salvatierra Wreck: A 250 ft ferryboat that sank in 1976 lies in shallow water 45 - 60 ft deep. Located in the San Lorenzo Channel at the south end of Espirito Santos Island, common residents are snappers and a profusion of reef fish.

La Reina: This island offers another opportunity to explore a wreck. In addition to healthy and diverse walls, you will see a wide variety if fish here as well sea lions, who also play in the rocky reefs.

Bentory Rock: This small rock on the west of Cerralvo Island is a great place to find large fish. In the gentle but constant current, hundreds of fish hang out collecting dinner as it passes. Large groupers and legions of jacks mingle with morays and sea turtles to make this a great dive site.

San Francisquito: Like El Bajo, this site is very popular with advanced divers. Look for large schools of tuna, big marlin and mackerel. Since it is one of the furthest sites from La Paz, it is best combined with one of our Camping/Diving Safaris, available June - November.
